Opportunity Title Professional Services for Bird Nuisance Mitigation Study
Description

The City of Sunnyvale (the “City”) is seeking qualified consultant services to research and prepare relevant information regarding the nuisance bird populations in Sunnyvale. This Study would investigate the root causes of the increase in the nuisance bird populations in City public spaces with a focus on the areas around Plaza Del Sol, Historic South Murphy Avenue and the Sunnyvale Community Center. The result of this study will be a recommendation on mitigation techniques for the bird populations in the specified areas. The Study would also give a broad range of mitigation techniques and strategies, with costs, both short and long-term, that could be implemented together or independently to discourage or eliminate the large nuisance bird populations in the previously mentioned locations. The Study would require the Consultant to hold outreach meetings to engage local stakeholders. B. BACKGROUND Over the past decade, the City of Sunnyvale has grappled with a notable surge in nuisance bird populations, prominently featuring species such as the American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) and Canadian Goose (Branta canadensis) across various public spaces. Particularly concentrated in downtown areas such as Plaza Del Sol and Historic South Murphy Avenue, these avian populations have led to a significant escalation in the presence of bird droppings. The accumulation of droppings, notably prominent in Plaza Del Sol, South Murphy Avenue, and their immediate vicinities including streets and sidewalks, has become a visual nuisance and a cause for concern among residents, businesses, and city staff alike.
